‘Spider-Man the Musical’ Is Going to Be Great, Says Random Blogger

So, some blogger, who's friends with some guy named Glen, who's working on the Julie Taymor–helmed, U2-scored Spider-Man musical, got Glen to give her a sneak preview of the show. Like you, she was skeptical. No more — now she's making Tony predictions. Said blogger posted about it on her LiveJournal, but it's since been taken down, which we guess makes everything she said probably true, right? Publishers Weekly's the Beat blog blurbed the relevant parts, below:

It's fairly well-documented that Julie Taymor is a genius, but I was dubious when I first heard about this project. It’s Peter Parker plus Arachne (you know, from the myths about spiders) and it’s Green Goblin and Mary Jane and a greek chorus of geeks (geek chorus, snort snort) and, of course, J.J. Jameson. Glen was kind enough to show us all of the set design sketches and they are amazing — stylish and graphic with forced perspective and vertigo-inducing angles. Lots of LED stuff, also. We also got to see test footage from the swinging and flying and a short video of the team figuring out how to shoot webs. As Glen said, obviously there are going to be a lot of wires in this show. If it bothers you to see them, this is not the show for you.

We also got to hear some music from the workshop they did recently and, you know, it rocks. It’s undeniably U2 in the very best way. There’s a beautiful duet between Peter and MJ that I’m sure we’ll all see at the 2010 Tonys.

Musical do Homem-Aranha sofre adiamento




A Hello Entertainment, uma das empresas
responsáveis pela produção do musical Spider-Man: Turn Off The
Dark, anunciou a paralisação temporária da produção por motivos
financeiros. A produtora informa que o musical, com um orçamento estimado de
45 milhões de dólares, encontrou "problemas inesperados de fluxo de
caixa". Tal valor pode fazer de Homem -Aranha o show mais caro da
história da Broadway.

A versão musical tinha, por enquanto, Evan Rachel Wood
como Mary Jane e Alan Cumming como Duende Verde. A
trilha sonora tem letra e música de Bono e The
Edge. A direção é de Julie Taymor, que dirigiu O
Rei Leão, um grande sucesso na Broadway, e o filme Across the
Universe.

Para aqueles que já consideram o projeto morto, a produtora
informou que planos para solucionar o problema já estão definidos e que o
trabalho deve ser reiniciado em breve. A declaração oficial da produtora mantém
que a paralisação não deve afetar a estreia, marcada para 25 de fevereiro de
2010 no Hilton Theatre. Em junho, a produção já havia anunciado o adiamento das
apresentações de pré-estreia, alteradas de janeiro para fevereiro.

U2 explain Spider-Man 'opera'

Bono and The Edge have described their forthcoming Spider-Man musical as "dizzy" and "not a straight take on the myth." Turn Off The Dark,
the production the Dublin band has written music and lyrics for, is set
to open on Broadway in New York in 2010. They also confirmed American
actress Evan Rachel Wood would play the part of MJ and revealed more
about the other characters.

Speaking to Radio 1's Edith Bowman,
Bono said: "We've got a new villain, it's a girl. It's a very
extraordinary role. We've taken it to a much more dizzy place than
you'd expect. We've got big tunes. We're very proud of it."

Bono
explained the characters won't be the same which appeared in comic or
the film adaptations of the original Marvel comic series.

"Our
Peter Parker is much more...not Kurt Cobain, but a kind of slacker, a
more kind of shy sort of guy," said Bono. "It touches on opera, it
touches on rock 'n' roll. There are some real character driven songs as
well, very unusual song types for us," explained guitarist The Edge.

Not musical fans

The guitarist was keen not to describe the production, directed by Julie Taymor, as a musical, but rather an "opera."

"It
is a new challenge. The thing is we don't really like musicals. Most
musicals are really pants. They're really not very cool," said The
Edge. "It is much more like opera than a straight musical. We're
actually not calling it a musical for that reason because we don't want
to put people off. We just thought, 'Well if we're going to do this we
should do something that knocks it out of the park and hits on every
level with great tunes'."

Evan Rachel Wood, previously star of films like Thirteen and The Wrestler, will play the role of MJ.

"She's
the greatest actor of her generation, she's the one to watch," said
Bono. "She happens to sing like a bird, it's like a true voice. She's a
very pure spirit and a very bright mind and she brings the part of MJ
to life really."

Despite their involvement in the writing the band said they will not appear themselves.

"We
made one rule for ourselves though that we would never have Spider-Man
singing. A guy singing in tights can't happen," joked The Edge.

U2, who recently performed two nights at London's Wembley Stadium, are currently touring the U.K. with their 360 tour.

Para começar, um esclarecimento: o espectáculo que Bono e The Edge estão criar é para a Broadway, envolve pessoas a cantar e uma história sobre o homem-aranha, mas não é um musical. Os rapazes não gostam da palavra. "[Os musicais] não são muito fixes", disse o guitarrista à BBC Radio 1. Em alternativa, avança o jornal britânico The Guardian, sugerem um termo muito mais fixe: ópera.

Assim sendo, a ópera vai chamar-se "Turn off the Dark". Julie Taymor, realizadora de filmes como "Frida" (2002), vai dirigir os actores. Bono e The Edge são responsáveis pela música e pelas letras.

"Estabelecemos uma regra", avançou The Edge. "Nunca vamos ter o homem-aranha a cantar. Não pode acontecer termo um gajo em collants a cantar." Já Peter Parker, o alter-ego do super-herói, não vai conseguir escapar a uma ária rock ou duas.

A actriz Rachel Evan Wood vai interpretar a paixão de Parker, Mary Jane. Só não se sabe ainda quem vai ser a "extraordinária" vilã.

"Turn off The Dark" tem um orçamento de 21 milhões de euros. Deverá estrear em 2010 em Nova Iorque.

The Edge ha comentado que el musical de Spiderman sigue adelante. Los 45 millones de dólares que necesita el musical para ponerse en marcha ha hecho que esté haya estado en un limbo durante un tiempo, pero ya se ha encontrado una nueva financiación.

The Edge ha comentado que tuvo una reunión ayer con todos las personas implicadas en el proyecto, incluyendo a la directora Julie Taymor. El nuevo productor, Michael Cohl, está poniendo cada cosa en su lugar. Las ruedas siguen girando.

"Se abrirá antes de finales de año", declaro The Edge. A diferencia de muchos pesimistas, queremos ver Spiderman tejiendo su red en Broadway. También queremos escuchar la banda sonora de U2. "La música está a punto de terminarse también", dice Edge.
