‘Spider-Man the Musical’ Is Going to Be Great, Says Random Blogger

So, some blogger, who's friends with some guy named Glen, who's working on the Julie Taymor–helmed, U2-scored Spider-Man musical, got Glen to give her a sneak preview of the show. Like you, she was skeptical. No more — now she's making Tony predictions. Said blogger posted about it on her LiveJournal, but it's since been taken down, which we guess makes everything she said probably true, right? Publishers Weekly's the Beat blog blurbed the relevant parts, below:

It's fairly well-documented that Julie Taymor is a genius, but I was dubious when I first heard about this project. It’s Peter Parker plus Arachne (you know, from the myths about spiders) and it’s Green Goblin and Mary Jane and a greek chorus of geeks (geek chorus, snort snort) and, of course, J.J. Jameson. Glen was kind enough to show us all of the set design sketches and they are amazing — stylish and graphic with forced perspective and vertigo-inducing angles. Lots of LED stuff, also. We also got to see test footage from the swinging and flying and a short video of the team figuring out how to shoot webs. As Glen said, obviously there are going to be a lot of wires in this show. If it bothers you to see them, this is not the show for you.

We also got to hear some music from the workshop they did recently and, you know, it rocks. It’s undeniably U2 in the very best way. There’s a beautiful duet between Peter and MJ that I’m sure we’ll all see at the 2010 Tonys.

O musical do Homem-Aranha, produzido por Bono e The Edge, do U2, já escalou sua Mary Jane, par romântico do herói aracnídeo. A atriz Evan Rachel Wood revelou ao website IESB nesta semana que viverá a ruiva na Broadway.

A ex-namorada do roqueiro Marylin Manson ainda revelou que os ensaios começam em 2009, e que a intenção é estrear a peça no circuito de teatros nova-iorquino em 2010, diferentemente do que se imaginava até então. Jornais nova-iorquinos esperavam que o musical estivesse em cartaz já no ano que vem.

Wood ainda contou que seu par no filme Across the Universe, Jim Sturgess, pode ser o Homem-Aranha no musical, mas que "ainda estão tentando convencê-lo" a participar.

Em outubro, o jornal New York Post revelou que a produção do musical será a mais cara da história, com um orçamento que chega aos US$ 40 milhões. O Post ainda calculou que a peça precisa ficar oito anos ininterruptamente em cartaz para cobrir seus gastos.

U2 reveal all about Spiderman Musical

U2’s Spiderman musical could open within a year, guitarist The Edge has revealed.

He and Bono have been writing the music and lyrics for the project which is being made with Tony-winning director Julie Taymor.

Speaking for the first time about the project, The Edge said a number of the songs had already been written and the musical is “in a pretty good state”.

In an interview for the new edition of Q, he explained: “I think the musical had its heyday back in the ’40s, ’50s, ’60s era. I don’t think there’s been anything that interesting done in it since … Anyway, we’ve always harboured this sneaky ambition that maybe one day we might try our hand in that area."

Since hooking up with Taymor, who won Tonys for her work on Disney's Lion King, Bono and The Edge have teamed up with scriptwriter Glenn Berger. "He’s come up with some great dialogue. The overall story was really Julie working with Glenn, and Bono and myself riding shotgun with the odd idea here and there – as they do for the songs.

"We love to delve into other people’s creative worlds and figure out how it all happens. We’ve written a lot of the songs at this point. It’s in a pretty good state, and I hope it’ll open this year. We’re not sure where in the world, but most likely it will be in New York."

It is not the first time U2 have been associated with a comic book movie - they wrote the theme for Batman Forever, Hold Me Thrill Kiss Me Kill Me which featured an animated version of the band in the promo.

The guitarist said he and Bono would be around for a "good few weeks" of the rehearsals: "There won’t be a full orchestra – it’ll be something like 18 or 20 musicians: string players, brass, some woodwind. The core will be a rock’n’roll band. But it is going to be interesting to write for other people. We have already written a lot of songs that are for women to sing. That’s a whole other set of challenges, to write in the right key and all those technical things."

El musical de Spiderman en el que participan Bono y Edge, podría estrenarse en el plazo de un año, ha revelado The Edge.

Dirigido por Julie Taymor, el musical de Spiderman es uno de los proyectos más ambiciosos de la temporada. The Edge ha comentado que ya han escrito un buen numero de canciones y la música "está en un buen estado".

En una entrevista para la nueva edición de Q, explicó:

"Creo que el musical tuvo su momento de apogeo en los años 40, 50 y 60. No creo que se haya hecho nada interesante desde entonces... En cualquier caso, siempre hemos albergado la ambición de que quizá algún día pudiéramos meter nuestras manos en este terreno".
Bono y The Edge han colaborado con el guionista Glenn Berger: "Vino con un gran diálogo. La historia fue realmente trabajada por Julie y Glenn, y Bono y yo íbamos de un lado a otro con extrañas ideas, aquí y allá”.

The Edge, o guitarrista do U2, falou sobre o musical do Homem-Aranha pela primeira vez em entrevista à revista inglesa Q. Idealizada por ele e Bono, a peça terá a atriz Evan Rachel Wood no papel de Mary Jane (o ator principal ainda não foi revelado).

O músico revelou que boa parte das músicas já está pronta, e que "espera que [a peça] estréie neste ano". The Edge ainda afirmou que, diferente da maioria dos musicais, não haverá uma orquestra completa no palco. "Será algo em torno de 18 ou 20 músicos: cordas, metais e instrumentos de sopro de madeira. O núcleo será uma banda de rock."

A direção do musical ficará por conta de Julie Taymor, que ganhou o prêmio Tony, o mais importante do teatro nos EUA, por seu trabalho no musical baseado na animação O Rei Leão. Bono e The Edge também recrutaram o roteirista Glenn Berger. "Ele criou ótimos diálogos. A idéia realmente foi Julie trabalhar com Glenn, enquanto eu e Bono ficamos como que no banco do passageiro, palpitando aqui e ali - assim como eles fazem com as músicas", disse à revista.

You know, some days I really like my job.

This evening, after seeing a matinee of Exit The King (more on that challenging, exciting, difficult, witty, utterly brilliant production later), I headed down to The Times Center on 41st Street for a special sneak preview of Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, the new mega-musical opening next January at Broadway's Hilton Theatre. The talent is tremendous -- Julie Taymor (The Lion King) directing, Eiko Ishioka (Coppola's Dracula and the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony) on costumes, and, of course, U2's Bono and The Edge, composing their first-ever score for the stage. I think it's safe to say that no other musical this decade has generated more excitement or interest, and its pre-sales -- currently available only through specialty groups -- are through the roof.

But is it any good? Are the casting rumors true? Will Taymor's vision please both fanboys and theatre queens? Your intrepid editor was about to find out...and perhaps shake hands with Bono. (Hot!)

The presentation began with Taymor, who spoke at length about the elements that drew her to the project...essentially, the classical structure of Peter Parker's journey from everyman to hero. Unlike Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films (which moved from the story's comic book roots toward a more naturalistic, real-world interpretation), Taymor is, unsurprisingly, going the other way -- embracing the webcrawler's inherent theatricality, and placing him inside a stylized New York City populated with heroes and (multiple) supervillains.

The set designs, displayed on the huge projection screen in the photo above, drew inspiration from the pop-art colors and the lines of comic book panels while playing with multiple perspectives. Ishioka's costumes were breathtaking -- a rogues gallery of the villains that appear onstage in the musical received audible gasps from the audience, including the Green Goblin, Lizard, Kraven, Swarm, and a new female villain created at the behest of Taymor, Swiss Miss (dressed in immaculate white dominatrix gear and multiple knives...hot!). Fans of Dr. Octopus and Sandman should know, however, that neither made an appearance in the presentation, although Taymor hinted at a special villain yet to be identified who appears in the piece.

Taymor addressed the question on everyone's mind right away: will Spider-Man spin webs and fly through the air? The answer was a resounding yes...the character will swing through the theatre and over the audience. She then showed a video from last year's top-secret "flying workshop" in Los Angeles, where she, stunt designers from the Spider-Man movies, and aerialists from Cirque du Soleil spent two weeks in a studio lot working on "webslinger technology" for the musical. The results were pretty impressive...the wires are visible, but the moves are so stunning you forget them very fast. I'm only one opinion, but I loved the effect. Can't wait to see it with all of the production elements next January!

After a rambling, geektastic speech by book writer Glen Berger, there was nothing left but to hear the songs. To wild applaus, Taymor introduced Bono and The Edge, and the two men ambled out onto the stage. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day -- these two global superstars, who have played stadiums all over the world and won every award imaginable, actually seemed a little nervous playing these songs to an audience for the first time! They were, if you can imagine it, even a little adorable, like kids with a new toy...playful, smart, interesting, and genuinely excited to be working on a stage musical. (Bono mentioned that they first got the idea to do a musical from Andrew Lloyd Webber, and name-dropped Rodgers and Hammerstein in their opening remarks.)

Bono and The Edge previewed eight songs (five in their entirety and three snippets) over speakers in what sounded like prerecorded studio demos. The vocals, however, were sung live by five unknown actors who, Taymor mentioned, had only had one day of rehearsal. (This quintet was not, necessarily, part of the cast; she also mentioned that they had just started the audition process, and throughout the day there was never a reference to ANY possible cast members...not even the oft-mentioned Evan Rachel Wood and Jim Sturgess.)

My favorite songs included two beautiful ballads written for Peter Parker which bookended the presentation, "Rise Above" and "Boy Falls From The Sky." Both were incredibly successful at marrying story to lyric; they also managed to simultaneously sound like U2 rock tracks AND Broadway classics. I also liked the title ballad, "Turn Off The Dark," a minor-chord metaphor for heroism, and an uptempo rocker, "Bouncing Off The Walls," which will have Peter taking the title literally...with walls that move to accomodate his bouncing!

Less successful were a character number called "Bullying By Numbers," a percussive track called "Pull The Trigger," and a ballad that (I think) was called "If The World Should End." The latter might have just been the female performer, who had breathing problems and sang out of tune for long sections. It's hard to evaluate songs that haven't yet been taken to the production level, so I reserve the right to change my opinions, for good or ill, once it opens!

All in all, though, I was thoroughly impressed...energized, even, by Taymor's thoughtful approach to the material, the dynamic execution of the designers, and the palpable energy of the production team. Can we dare to hope that Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark might be a great musical in the making? A week ago, I didn't imagine such a thing was possible. Today, I'm not only thinking it. I'm betting on it.

Estou muito curiosa para ouvir isso. Eu gosto muito da "multi-utilidade" desses dois. Acho que esse espírito de sempre buscar coisas novas - que é a marca do U2 - sempre trás bons frutos. Esse musical deve estar muito bom. Estou curiosa demais.

Bono and Edge joined Julie Taymor in New York a few days ago to preview 'Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark' which is set to open on Broadway early next year.

'It's fun for us to work in a different idiom than we're used to,' explained Bono. 'It's great to not be writing for the first person and to step inside some of these fantastic characters.'

The Spider-Man preview, hosted by Julie, Bono and Edge, took place at The Times Center and this is what we learned.

1. 'Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark' will open at Broadway's Hilton Theater on February 18th next year, and previews begin on January 16th.

2. It's directed by Julie Taymor ('The Lion King' and Beatles movie 'All Across The Universe' in which Bono played Dr Robert ) and written by Julie
with Glen Berger.

3. The narrative 'follows the story of teenager Peter Parker, whose unremarkable life is turned upside-down - literally - when he's bitten by a genetically altered spider and wakes up the next morning clinging to his bedroom ceiling. This bullied science-geek, suddenly endowed with astonishing powers, soon learns, however, that with great power comes great responsibility as villains test not only his physical strength but also his
strength of character.'

4. Costumes are by Eiko Ishioka (Coppola's 'Dracula' and the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony) and according to one early reviewer, they are 'breathtaking'.

5. Edge and Bono have written all the music and lyrics and eight of the songs were previewed by a group of actors, including: 'Bouncing off the Walls', 'Turn off the Dark', 'Bullying By Numbers' and the ballads 'Rise Above' and 'Boy Falls From the Sky'.
